Voyager Reviews

This is just an ongoing post for my own benefit to review the Star Trek series Voyager. Enjoy or ignore as it pleases you :) This will be updated as I make my way through the series. I plan to give each episode a star ranking out of 4 stars, and make episode comments as they strike me.

Re: The Post Tag - "Magnus Geek-us." The second word is self explanatory (I'm Catholic, I'm crunchy, and oh, I'm a huge science fiction fan. I'm not ashamed :-p). The first refers to St. Albert Magnus, who is apparently the patron saint of the natural sciences, which is as close as I could find to science fiction. It wouldn't be a Mrs. 2nd Lt. blog post without a Catholic reference! :)

Season 1
1.&2. "The Caretaker" *** strong start, interesting premise, irritating feminist attempt at the Captain. Why can't a woman be a strong woman by acting like a WOMAN instead of acting like a man?

3. "Parallax" ** 1/2 TNG rip-off

4. "Time & Again" **1/2 ANOTHER time paradox episode.

5. "Phage" **

6. "The Cloud" ** TNG Rip-off of alien living in space - the pea pod/whaley thing, etc.

7. "Eye of the Needle" **

8. "Ex Post Facto" *** not too bad actually; murder mystery, respecting alien sovereignty which has been done before (albeit, badly, with Wesley, thanks TNG), but enjoyable over all.

9. "Emanations" ** ahh, ST writers - never fail to patronize religion, even if it is an alien culture's views on the afterlife

10. "Prime Factors" ** reverse Prime Directive, blah blah

11. "State of Flux" *** 1/2 - espionage, Cardi posing as Bajoran, selling techonology traitors, good time!

12. "Heroes & Demons" * 1/2 - a) I hate "Beowulf" and 2) I hate "Beowulf" on the holodeck even more. Although kudos to the Mars Rebel Colony leader from Babylon 5 for playing the Danish princess Freja. I love sci-fi crossover guest stars!

13. "Cathexis" **

14. "Faces" ***1/2 interesting inner-character conflict - Torres gets to talk to her self when her Klingon DNA is separated from her human DNA, thus making two of her.

15. "Jetrel" *1/2

16. "Learning Curve" ** ummm... season ender? Lame.

Season 2

1. "The 37's" ** Amelia Earhart abducted by Delta quadrant aliens? Lame opener to go with the lame closer....

2. "Imitations" ** best part? guest starring Rom!

3. "Projections" **** first rewatchable episode! great mindgame about Doctor being real or not.

4. "Elogium" *1/2 Kes in heat, ship seen as herd rival to alien lifeform - does it get any lamer?

5. "Non Sequitor" *1/2. lame.

6. "Twisted" ** lamer. rip-off of Picard trapped in Barion sweep, only, you know, that one was GOOD.

7. " Parturition" *1/2 really, Star Trek? an alien dinosaur baby? seriously?

8. "Persistence of Vision" *1/2 lame sauce with cheese. alien tries to take over ship with telepathy - been there, done that better.

9. "Tattoo" ** Native American Lame

10. "Cold Fire" *1/2 - sigh. The Dax equivalent episodes have begun - a Kes episode. Yawn.

11. "Maneuvers" *1/2

12. "Resistance" * so lame I updated photos while watching

13. "Prototype" *1/2 lame with a robot

14. "Alliances" *1/2 just when you thought they would finally figure out the Prime Directive is stupid.... they don't

15. "Threshold" * lame with evolution - apparently humanity will "evolve" into giant lizard alligators. lame.

16. "Meld" *1/2 eh. Tuvok, crazy, blah.

17. "Dreadnought" * computer controlled missile gone wrong = episode gone wrong.

18. "Death Wish" *** John de Lancie, you make even Voyager episodes good (despite the fact that I'm pretty sure I disagree with the moral implications of this one)

19. "Lifesigns" ***1/2 apparently, Dr. episodes tend to be better episodes. Darn that whole hologram thing. He's NOT real! But it seems like he is....

20. "Investigations" ** 1/2 fake Tom betrays Voyager - obviously wasn't that good sicne I can't remember it

21. "Deadlock" ***1/2 surprisingly entertaining, fun plot twist at the end. Voyager gets duplicated in a fill-in-the-blacnk spacial anomoly, choas ensures, etc etc. Well done.

22. "Innocence" **1/2 saw the "aging backward" plot twist coming a mile away.

23. "The Thaw" 1/2 ohmigosh, terrible. so terrible I read a book. 1st episode of DS9 with the weird alien gameboard terrible. In fact, this seemed to be a rip-off. Hello? Rip-off the GOOD ones?

24. "Tuvix" ***1/2 interesting moral quandry - two crew members merge into one in a transporter accident - now does his right to life triumph over the original two people? Drawback was the HORRIFIC Kes acting we were forced to endure. I mean, wow. Awful. Dare I say, worse than Dax.

25. "Resolutions" **** LOVED IT! Total romance novel plot - Janeway and Chakotay stranded together on a planet, presumably forever, tension rises. sigh. romantically satisfying science fiction - can a girl ask for anything more?

26. "Basics, Part 1" **1/2 - can't wait for the Kazon sector of space to be over with!

Season 3

1. "Basics, Part 2" *1/2 - yawn. shocker, they retook the ship.

2. "Flashback" *1/2 yamn with cpt sulu guest star.

3. "The Chute" **1/2 - crazy alien prison - reminds me of B5 "down below"

4. "The Swarm" *

5. "False Profits" 1/2 * Ferengi in the Delta quadrant. 'Nuff said.

6. "Remember" **1/2 - Alien Holocaust relived in memories. Interesting.

7. "Sacred Ground" 0 *s - this episode is so boring and blah that I can't even tell you what's happening AS I watch it slash mess around on facebook.

8. "Future's End, Part 1" ** two episodes in Venice Beach, 1996, time travel, blah blah.

9. "Future's End, Part 2" **

10. "Warlord" * most blatant TNG ripoff I've ever seen. Seriously, Voyager, this is the best you can do? The worst part is that Data, Troi and O'Brien were TEN times the possessed by an alien actor that Kes is. Yes, even Troi.

11. "The Q and the Grey" ***1/2 - awesome, awesome, awesome. Reference to Chakotay and Janeway's "thing," Q is always funny AND I'm pretty sure that Q's girlfriend is played by the same actress who played Worf's mate K'Ehleyr from TNG. Cool beans!

12. "Macrocosm" *** genuine sci-fi - what if viruses went macro and became giant bug creatures bent on destruction (well, really they already are bent on destruction, they're just microscopic. way scarier when they're the size of ostriches!)

13. "Fair Trade" * so boring Neelix episode, I don't even remember it.

14. "Alter Ego" ** Crazy alien inhabits holodeck, Kim & Tuvok fall in love with her.... eh?

15. "Coda" ** Caught in a time loop; tricked by aliens what? Been there (TNG AND DS9), done that, got a t shirt.

16. "Blood Fever" *** Tom & B'Elanna? Definitely want to see something happen there later!

17. "Unity" ***1/2 Really good Borg deborgified but still not ethical episode. Miffed at Chakotay for "straying" from the Captain

18. "The Darkling" * awful. Kes cannot get off the show fast enough.

19. "Rise" *1/2 something Tuvok & Neelix, something something, I fastforwarded.

20. "Favorite Son" ** Crazy female alien race needs to cellularly rape men for reproduction, suck Harry into thinking he's part of their race, he escapes, ya.

21. "Before and After" *** only decent Kes episode -traveling back through time, fun.

22. "Real Life" *** Doctor tries to have a family on the holodeck, but when its too perfect, B'Elanna tweaks it - really good character epi for the doctor.

23. "Distant Origin" ** dinosaurs evolved into sentient beings and then transported to the delta quadrant - now they're a super ignorant "religious" species opposed to evolution. I'd be offended except its too lame to care.

24. "Displaced" *** clever sci-fi - each member of the crew is being replaced by an alien; turns out, thats how their species wages war.

25. "Worst Case Scenario" **1/2 - oh Seska, apparently, we can't escape you even once you're dead. Holodeck program gone wrong; oft repeated plot idea, but fun nonetheless.

26. "Scorpion, Part 1" *** 1/2 not too shabby, Voyager, not too shabby - Borg and crazy Species 8272!

Season 4

1. "Scorpion, Part 2" *** 1/2 only downfall is that now 7of9 is on the show. Ugh. Lets see if she's worse or just as bad as Kes.

2. "The Gift" *** Seven tries to become human; not bad.

3. "Day of Honor" ***1/2 Torres has "really bad day" - ends up in suit in space with oxygen running out with Paris - tells him she loves him! Yay!!!

4. "Nemesis" **1/2 "hate is learned, not born," "two sides to every conflict," Israeli-Palestinian propaganda. Blah.

5. "Revulsion" **1/2 pyschopathic hologram hates "organics," murders own crew. Oops.

6. "The Raven" **1/2 Seven's memories of her assimilation surface.

7. "Scientific Method" ***1/2 really good sci-fi - aliens out of phase (thus invisible) doing experiments on the crew.

8. "Year of Hell, Part 1" **** is this the first 4 star episode? great! guest starring Red from That 70's Show as an alien race temporally eliminating species to alter his race's timeline (presumably to get his family back) and beating the heck out of Voyager. Ends with nonessential personnel launching escape pods because ship is falling apart.

9. "Year of Hell, Part 2" **** great conclusion

10. "Random Thoughts" **1/2 B'Elanna angry thoughts get her in trouble - outlawing bad thoughts? little ridiculo.

11. "Concerning Flight" *1/2 DaVinci made real when holodeck computer is stolen - borrrrring.

12. "Mortal Coil" * religion hating episode - no heaven, etc etc.

13. "Waking Moments" **1/2 attacked in dreams by dream alien. smells like a TNG rip-off.

14. "Message in a Bottle" *** decent doctor episode (Andy Dick AWFUL guest star)

15. "Hunters" **1/2 first Hirogen episode.

16. "Prey" **1/2 second Hirogen episode. 7of9 disobeys direct order and kills Species 8271.

17. "Retrospect"*1/2 7of9 episode blah blah blah.

18. "The Killing Game, Pt 1" *** Hirogen take over the ship and use the holodeck to make the crew be "hunted" in German occupied France. not too bad.

19. "The Killing Game, Pt 2" *** decent conclusion

20. "Vis À Vis" **1/2 Someone steals Tom's body, beginning of a string of blah episodes. Nothing terrible, persay, just kind of mediocre.

21. "The Omega Directive" **1/2 - Borg's "god" is perfection, the perfect molecule, apparently super destructive, Star Trek, stay out of the spiritual - you do it poorly!

22. "Unforgettable" ** Chakotay love story, aliens that make you forget, very forgettable.

23. "Living Witness" **1/2 pretty boring 700 years in the future, Doctor reactivated to tell what "really" happened, but gets an ok rating because the "evil" Voyager recreation is pretty amusing.

24. "Demon" **1/2 planet "terraforms" Harry & Tom to survive on the jupiter like planet. Eh.

25. "One" **1/2 - decent 7of9 episode

26. "Hope and Fear" ** blah ending to a blah end of a season. In like a lion, out like a lamb, eh Season 4? Season 5 better be better....

Season 5

1. "Night" *** stuck in 2 years of "dark space."

2. "Drone" **** Like Hugh from TNG, a borg who becomes a friend - really well done episode, self-sacrifice, what it means to be human.

3. "Extreme Risk" ***

4. "In the Flesh" ***1/2 Species 8472 has a whole simulation going to invade Starfleet.

5. "Once Upon a Time" *1/2 boring Neelix character episode...

6. "Timeless" **1/2 Kim and Chakotay made it back to Earth, but destroyed Voyager - go back in time to save them.

7. "Infinite Regress" *** Borg multiple personality

8. "Nothing Human" ***1/2 medical ethics - use the research of a Auschwitz type Cardassian doctor to save someone or no?

9. "Thirty Days"

10. "Counterpoint"

11. "Latent Image"

12. "Bride of Chaotica!

13. "Gravity"

14. "Bliss"

15. "Dark Frontier, Pt 1"

16. "Dark Frontier, Pt 2"

17. "The Disease"

18. "Course: Oblivion"

19. "The Fight"

20. "Think Tank"

21. "Juggernaut"

22. "Someone to Watch Over Me"

23. "11:59"

24. "Relativity"

25. "Warhead"

26. "Equinox, Pt 1"
